Healthy Gardening: How To Create Your Own Organic Garden

You can rinse your produce off while it is in the basket, and the excess water will strain through the holes of your laundry basket.

Use equal parts dried and green plant material for your own compost. Green plant material can include old flowers, fruit waste, grass clippings, vegetable waste, and leaves. Sawdust, straw, cardboard, paper and wood pulp are all examples of dried plant material. Avoid ashes, meat, charcoal and diseased plants in your compost.

Seeds Require

When planting seeds in containers, remember that the planting depth should be around three times bigger than the seed size. There are exceptions, however. Some types of seeds require more direct sunlight than others, and as such they should not be fully covered. Typical examples are petunias and ageratum. Throughout the year and in different climates, it may be necessary to vary your watering schedule. The amount of water you need depends on when you are doing the watering, whether your water is high-quality and the grade of the soil in your garden. Avoid watering leaves in a warm and humid climate to prevent leaf fungus from appearing. Instead, the roots should be thoroughly watered.

Your soil will be healthier if you add mulch. A layer of mulch can protect the soil beneath. It keeps the soil cool on very hot days, thus protecting the roots in the ground. It greatly reduces water loss, keeping the soil moist with fewer waterings. This will also help to keep weeds under control.

Excessive amounts of water makes it harder for plants to get the nutrients they need from the soil. Only water as necessary when there is no rain in the forecast, or for plants which need extra watering. Skip watering your plants for a couple of days if a heavy rainstorm has descended; natural rainwater can be particularly good for your plants as well.

Plant your own garlic with organic methods. Cloves of garlic should be planted in well-drained soil with frequent watering in either the fall or spring. Plant them approximately 4 inches apart at a depth of 1 or 2 inches beneath the surface of the soil with the pointed end facing upward. While they are growing and still green, the shoots can be used like scallions or chives. The bulbs of the garlic are ready for harvesting when the very tops of them begin to brown. To harden the garlic’s skin after picking, dry the it in the sunlight for a few days. You can then store the bulbs loosely or gathered into bunches in a cool location.
