Make Your First Organic Garden A Success

You want to have a fresh and organic garden. The timing is perfect, and it is time for you to begin. These tips will help you start an organic garden.

Involve the whole family in your gardening hobby; children find growing things to be very interesting. You can provide a good learning experience that your children can appreciate the more they learn on how to grow healthy produce.

Be sure to plant some strawberries for your children and grandchildren. Ever-bearing ones are especially nice. Children will be more willing to help you if they can pluck their own fruit from the garden.

Flower Beds

Use several inches of organic materials for mulch in your flower beds. This fights weeds, retains moisture, and gives your garden valuable nutrients. By adding mulch, you can give your flower beds a finished appearance.

Make gardening efficient. Do not spend half an hour looking everywhere for a tool. Prepare all of your tools prior to working in the garden, and then put them away neatly when finished. You can keep your garden tools in a tool belt, or in your pockets. Another good idea is to keep them all in a bucket that you carry around with you.

Spacing is one important factor in gardening. As plants grow and spread out, you will not always know how much space will be required. Your plants will need the space not only because of their physical size, but also because the space will provide air circulation for the garden. Think ahead and give each plant room for expansion, by properly spacing the seeds.

Dried Material

When composting lawn clippings, leaves, and other materials, it is best to add the same amount of green, freshly-cut material as you do dried material. You can use all types of green material in your compost pile, including cut grass, dead flowers, fruit peels and cores, and much more. Dried material includes straw, shredded paper, and cardboard. Don’t include ashes, diseased plants, charcoal meat, or carnivorous animal waste.

Would you like to kill those obnoxious weeds naturally? Layer sheets of newspaper on the surface of areas where you are trying to control weeds. Weeds can only grow when there is adequate sunlight. If the weeds have already sprouted, you can place the newspapers over them and they will die due to lack of sunlight. In time, the newspaper will decompose into the soil. Add visual appeal by placing some mulch over the top.

Try to use untreated wood, brick or stone and make a raised bed. If you choose to use wood, see to it that it’s untreated and that it can resist rotting. Cypress, locust and cedar are all very good choices. Treated wood can leach chemicals into any soil it rests against, so don’t use it in a garden with vegetables. If you have used treated lumber, line your beds with plastic.

Organic foods don’t contain any chemical pesticides. Although this is great for your health, you need to make sure that you check all the produce careful for any bugs or pests before consuming.

Any type of gardening can be a fun hobby because it brings you closer to the earth, but creating an organic garden is really good at this. Any form of gardening gives a basic outline for all others; teaching you the general methodology behind sewing, planting, and harvesting properly.

You may want to grow garlic organically. Take single garlic gloves and plant them in moist but drained soil at the start of spring or fall. Put them an inch or two down into the soil with the pointed end up placed about four inches apart. Green garlic shoots can be cut as they grow, and used in place of chives or scallions. The garlic will be matured when the green tops start drying out and turning brown. You should dry them outside in a sunny spot for a couple of days to harden the skin. Store the dried bulbs loosely or in bunches in a dark, cool area.

You should now feel enthusiastically prepared to enter the relaxing and productive world of organic gardening. If you thought that you were ready before, well you should now be an expert! You can grow an organic garden, now that you have the right tips and information.
