Organic Gardening Tips For Gardeners Of Any Level

If you want a healthy organic garden, you have many options. Once you learn about them, they are surprisingly easy to put into place.

Involve your children in gardening. A garden can provide a wonderful learning experience for children, and will give you an opportunity to bond with them while you produce healthy food.

Consider planting strawberries, especially ones that are everbearing, for your garden if you have small children. Children are thrilled to harvest fruit from their own garden, and doing so often makes them more enthusiastic about helping out with the more hum-drum aspects of tending a garden.

When growing organic plants indoors, it is important to consider the amount of light that is available to them. If the room you wish to grow them in faces in a direction that gets little light, choose varieties of plants which can accept this type of environment. If you already have plants that need full light and the natural light provided is not sufficient, artificial lights can supplement their needs.

You’ll save time and energy if you keep tools nearby while working in your garden. You can wear an apron or pants that have a lot of pockets, or use a big bucket or can. Tools you’ll need to garden efficiently include towels, gloves, pruning shears and other plant-specific tools.

After seeds have sprouted, they require less warmth than they did prior to sprouting. After growth begins, you can remove plants from any excessive heat sources. If you used plastic wrap to insulate your seedlings, you should now remove it. Watch your seeds carefully to know when you can take these steps.

In your flower beds and garden, utilize a few inches of organic mulch. Mulching is the perfect way to lock in moisture, nourish soil, and to keep away weeds. You will also have a gorgeous and finished organic flower bed.

Pine can make surprisingly great mulch. Some garden plants have a higher acidity, and prefer a more acidic soil. If that’s the case, the easiest thing to do is use pine needles for beds. Using several inches of needles to cover your beds provides acid for the soil as they begin to decompose.

You need to avoid chores in your organic garden stacking up. You may not have a lot of time to exclusively devote to your gardening hobby, but you can make the most of the time you do have. Even if you’re just taking the dog for a walk, bend down and pick a few weeds.

Compost Pile

Use equal parts of green and dried plant material in your compost pile. Green plant mulches include everything from fresh grass clippings, to unwanted vegetables, to recently pulled weeds. Dry materials, like sawdust, cut up wood pieces, cardboard, straw and shredded paper are good for your compost pile. Certain substances will undermine your composting efforts and cancel out any benefits; these include meat, charcoal, ash or plants that have diseases or fungal growths.

A good thing to know when it comes to your organic garden, and running it, is to, a couple times a day, lightly ruffle the seedlings with cardboard or your hand. This probably sounds like an odd recommendation, but research has shown that this technique encourages more plant growth, than no petting at all.

A raised bed can be built with untreated wood, brick or stone. Be sure that any wood you use isn’t chemically treated, and will be able to resist rot naturally. Good choices are cypress, cedar and locust. If you use treated wood in your vegetable garden, the chemicals in the wood can make their way into the soil, and in turn, to your crops. If you have already used lumber that is treated, you can line it with plastic or another type of barrier.

If you need to prove to customers that your produce is legitimately organic, you can become certified as an organic grower. This can increase your sales and also prove to your customers that they are getting the best produce out there.

Anyone can plant a garden, but only those with the proper knowledge will receive the most out of their crop. It is important to put these organic tips to good use.
