Use These Tips To Grow A Better Organic Garden!

Organic gardening can either be a major headache, or a very relaxing hobby. This list of tips should help you become a successful organic gardener.

You can help your plants resist disease by spraying them with aspirin water. Crush and dissolve one and one-half 325mg tablets in two full gallons of plain water. Simply spray your plants with the mixture, and this will help them fend off various diseases. You should spray your plants about once every three weeks.

Organize your gardening so that you can work efficiently. Don’t waste time searching for lost tools. In addition to keeping your gardening tools in one location, you should also clean your tools after each use. You may also wish to invest in a tool belt to keep all of your tools within reach while gardening.

Store a few plastic bags near your garden to slip on over your dirty gardening shoes. This allows you to keep going, getting back to your garden quickly.

Try to work in your garden at least a short time each day. Even if you can’t tend to your garden daily, you can do little things to help so that there is not a huge amount of work to be done when you are ready to get back to it. You can pull a few weeds when you take your dog outside.

Use equal parts of green and dried plant material in your compost pile. When you pull weeds from your garden, throw them in the compost. The same goes for vegetable trimmings and grass clippings. These are considered green materials. For the dry end of the spectrum, think of things like paper and cardboard, sawdust, hay, etc. Do not include charcoal, ashes, meat, carnivorous animal manure or diseased plants.

Want to get rid of weeds naturally? A good thick layer of newspaper can be laid down to control weeds. Without exposure to the sun, weeds cannot thrive. When you cover weeds with newspaper layers, they suffocate due to lack of light. In time, the newspaper will decompose into the soil. One way to enhance the appearance of your garden if you are using newspapers is to add an additional layer of mulch.

Slugs are a nuisance that can be easily remedied with the use of an organic beer tramp. Place a container in the ground so that the lip is even with the soil surface. Keep the jar filled with beer, up to about an inch from the top. The scent of the beer will bait the slugs into the jar and they will become trapped.

Treated Wood

If you are building a raised bed utilize stone, brick or wood that is untreated. Be sure to use wood that is naturally resistant to rotting and that has not been treated. Excellent choices are cedar, locust and cypress. In a veggie garden, don’t use treated wood since its chemicals can leech into the food crops and soil. If you have to use treated wood, you should line it with a bit of plastic to create a barrier.

Organic gardening, while requiring a good effort for great results, is a great way to live a greener life. Organic gardens require much patience and hard work, but you can have a wonderfully beautiful organic garden. The ideas presented above should help you hone your skills and reap a great harvest from your organic garden.
